What is GPX Cloud?

Greenpixie's rigorously researched dataset for millions of cloud usage types across every AWS, Azure and GCP service

We provide a carbon, energy and water figure for every possible SKU in the cloud, so the granularity is as good as it gets.

Granular
Actionable
Trusted

Using GPX Cloud, it's easy to estimate your entire cloud estate's emissions by enriching cloud usage reports with emissions metrics, line by line. This delivers emissions data with the same granularity as cost management platforms, allowing for unparalleled observability and action.

Data you can trust

Estimating energy consumption and researching emissions is our job

Greenpixie is trusted to power GreenOps services for businesses around the world. Our research team is constantly improving our estimations for hardware energy consumption for cloud operations, as well as researching PUE, embodied emissions, water consumption, local grid intensity and more.

We work both directly with enterprises and as partners with MSPs.

I've worked with a lot of GreenOps data sources, and the Greenpixie methodology stands head and shoulders above other approaches with its exceptional transparency and profound understanding of the complex realm of cloud carbon emissions reporting.

GPX Methodology

Our research team is committed to accurate and actionable cloud emissions data which stands up to the scrutiny of upcoming regulation as well as diligent ESG teams who demand the best. Our methodology has been contributed to by leading academics and cloud experts and, in 2024, was ISO verified as compliant with the GHG Protocol.

If you're new to cloud emissions and how the GreenOps community calculates them, Greenpixie provides professional learning and certification via the GreenOps Academy. Our first course, Cloud Sustainability Fundamentals, provides a basic equation for measuring emissions and goes into detail on all the necessary research areas of the Greenpixie methodology.

Below is an overview of how we achieve data that is location based, inclusive of cloud provider Scope 3 emissions, granular to the resource and instance level, and consistent across cloud providers. For the full detail, read the methodology in our documentation.

  1. Energy per pricing unit
Every SKU is mapped to the hardware that delivers it. Instances use measured whole-server power with their own memory, drives and GPUs; storage, data transfer and managed services have their own mappings. No cost or spend information is used. Cloud methodology, section 4 →
  2. IT electricityIT Electricity = usage amount × energy per pricing unitThe usage amount on each line of your bill, multiplied by the energy per pricing unit of its SKU. Cloud methodology, section 7.1 →
  3. Electricity usageElectricity Usage = IT Electricity × PUEAdds data centre overhead using the provider's published PUE. Cloud methodology, section 7.2 →
  4. Usage emissionsUsage emissions = Electricity Usage × Grid Carbon IntensityLocation-based: the grid carbon intensity of the grid areas supplying the line's region, for its hour or day. Grid and regions methodology →
  5. Manufacturing emissionsManufacturing emissions = server emissions × instance share × hours billed ÷ lifespan hoursComponent-by-component embodied emissions of the server, plus transport and end of life, shared out for the hours billed, plus a data centre building allowance. Embodied emissions methodology →
  6. Total emissionsTotal emissions = usage emissions + manufacturing emissionsUsage and manufacturing emissions combined. Output format →
  7. Water consumptionCooling = IT Electricity × WUE; generation = Electricity Usage × water intensityTwo columns: cooling water from the provider's WUE, and the water used to generate the electricity. Cloud methodology, section 7.4 →
